General Questions

Common signs include droppings, gnaw marks, unusual sounds (scratching, scurrying), visible pests, damaged food packages, unusual odors, and shed skins. If you notice any of these signs, especially multiple signs, it's worth investigating further or consulting a professional.
It depends on the species. Most common household pests are more nuisance than danger, but some can pose health risks (cockroaches trigger allergies, rodents spread diseases) or cause property damage (termites, carpenter ants). Use our identification tool to learn about specific risks.
Pests don't discriminate based on cleanliness. They enter homes seeking food, water, and shelter. They can come through tiny cracks, gaps around pipes, open doors, or hitchhike on packages, luggage, and secondhand items. Even the cleanest homes can have pest problems.
Activity varies by species. Generally: Spring brings ants and termite swarmers; Summer sees peak activity for most insects; Fall drives rodents indoors; Winter keeps indoor pests active while outdoor populations slow down. In Boston, expect mice in October-March and insects May-September.

Taking Action

For minor issues (a few ants, occasional spider), DIY methods often work. Call a professional for: large infestations, dangerous pests (termites, wasps, bed bugs), recurring problems, or if you're unsure what you're dealing with. Professional treatment is especially important for termites and bed bugs.
Start with prevention: seal entry points, remove food sources, fix moisture issues, and reduce clutter. For treatment, baits are generally more effective than sprays because they target the colony. Always follow product instructions carefully and keep treatments away from children and pets.
It varies by pest and severity. Ants may take 1-2 weeks with proper baiting. Mice can be reduced significantly in 2 weeks but complete elimination may take 4-6 weeks. Bed bugs typically require professional treatment over 2-3 visits. Termites need ongoing monitoring even after treatment.
When used according to label directions, most consumer products are safe. However, keep products away from children and pets, ventilate treated areas, and consider pet-safe options. Professional pest control companies use products and methods designed to minimize risk to household members.

Professional Services

Costs vary by pest type and severity. General pest treatment: $150-$400 for initial treatment. Termite treatment: $500-$2,500+. Bed bug treatment: $300-$1,500+ per room. Most companies offer free inspections and quotes. Ask about warranties and recurring service plans.
Look for: Massachusetts pesticide applicator license, liability insurance, good reviews on multiple platforms, clear pricing and service agreements, willingness to answer questions, and membership in professional associations. Get multiple quotes and ask about their approach and products used.
A reputable company will: inspect your home, identify the pest and entry points, explain their treatment plan, discuss any preparation needed, apply treatment, and schedule follow-up if necessary. You may need to leave the home during treatment and allow time for products to dry.
Annual inspections are recommended for most homes, especially for termites. If you've had pest problems before, more frequent inspections (quarterly or bi-annual) may be wise. Homes in wooded areas, older homes, or those with history of moisture issues should be inspected more frequently.

Prevention

Key prevention steps: seal cracks and gaps, fix moisture issues, store food in airtight containers, keep kitchen clean, manage garbage properly, reduce clutter, trim vegetation away from your home, store firewood away from the house, and inspect items before bringing them inside.
Some natural methods can help as part of an integrated approach: peppermint oil may deter mice and ants, diatomaceous earth can kill crawling insects, and cedar chips repel some pests. However, natural methods alone rarely solve established infestations. They work best for prevention and minor issues.
Pests can definitely travel between neighboring properties, especially in multi-unit buildings or closely spaced homes. Take preventive measures: seal entry points, reduce food sources, and consider a preventive treatment barrier around your home's perimeter. For shared buildings, encourage coordinated treatment.
Before winter: inspect and seal gaps around pipes, cables, and foundation (mice can squeeze through 1/4 inch gaps). Install door sweeps, repair screens, and seal around windows. Store firewood away from your home. Remove outdoor food sources. Consider a fall perimeter treatment.

Renters & Landlords

In Massachusetts, landlords must provide habitable housing, which includes being free of pests. They're typically responsible for pest control unless the lease specifies otherwise or the tenant caused the infestation through negligence. Document any pest issues in writing and notify your landlord promptly.
First, document everything and notify in writing. If they don't respond, contact Boston Inspectional Services or your local Board of Health to file a complaint. You may be able to withhold rent, repair and deduct, or break your lease in severe cases. Consult with a tenant's rights organization for guidance.
In Massachusetts, landlords cannot evict tenants solely for reporting bed bugs. Bed bugs are not a sign of poor hygiene and can happen to anyone. However, you must cooperate with treatment efforts. If you refuse to prepare for treatment or intentionally obstruct the process, that could be grounds for action.
For minor issues like occasional ants, basic DIY measures are fine. For significant infestations, notify your landlord first - it's typically their responsibility. Self-treating serious problems like bed bugs or termites may complicate matters and could even make you liable if the infestation spreads or treatment fails.
